this week’s kai conversation features australian fashion & accessories designer, lorna murray. known for her ethically and sustainably made sun hats, her eponymous label, lorna murray has become one of australia's most recognizable "must have" accessory brands. a textile artist and university lecturer, lorna has built an extensive career spanning more than twenty years. her signature pleated, foldable capri hat, cabana sun visor, and tropez tote—among others—have become synonymous with style icons, global travelers, and those seeking ethical, sustainable, chic luxury accessories and other bespoke, timeless pieces.

how did you first discover kai?

i first discovered kai here in sydney, australia. the brand immediately resonated with me - its essence of natural, effortless beauty & a simplicity which carries across the entire product range. i was also drawn to their quiet commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. this philosophy & commitment extends to the details of their eco conscious recyclable packaging.

what’s your favorite kai product and why?

it’s nearly impossible to choose just one, so i’ll share my top three. the kai body buffer for the way it polishes and softens the skin leaving me feeling refreshed. the kai signature body lotion for its everyday lightweight appeal and its ability to feel deeply hydrating. and the kai body glow because i love how it nourishes the skin with a glowing dewy finish reminding me of favourite summer holidays.

what’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

like many of us i have received lots of generous & great advice throughout my life but perhaps one of the best pieces of advice i’ve ever received was actually not to take advice on the more personal & important parts. it came a long time ago from someone i deeply respect who told me, “often advice comes from someone else’s experiences & perspectives, not yours, so trust yourself.” that really stayed with me. i’ve found that the most meaningful decisions i’ve made have come from tuning in rather than looking out. there is something beautiful and grounding about trusting your own intuition, your heart, your rhythm. it’s not about rejecting wisdom, but about knowing when to listen inwardly instead.

who is your role model?

my role model isn’t one single person, but rather a tapestry of women & men i’ve admired throughout my life & continue to admire - those who live with curiosity, a quiet strength, courage, integrity, empathy, imagination, and a good deal of lighthearted fun, spontaneity & vision. with these traits there is an ability to always see the beauty.

how would you describe your personal style?

i’d describe my personal style as diverse & eclectic but if i had to define it most succinctly i guess it’s relaxed, refined, & grounded in natural elegance. i gravitate toward timeless pieces with beautiful details & textures - linen, cotton, wool, worn-in leather, pieces that feel lived-in but clean & considered. embroideries, loose weaves, laces, hand knits & embellishments steal my heart every time. overall there is a balance that i intuitively look for: structure and ease, simplicity and soul. my fashion & interior choices are diverse and often mix elements from different styles, eras, cultures, or aesthetics.

what’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done?

i love the sense of discovery that comes with new places and experiences. my career in creative projects has enabled me undertake lots of solo traveling. in particular, india comes to mind as i reflect upon the many adventures there with creative pursuits. in india i follow instinct more than itinerary, navigating chaotic local markets, and meeting artisans in tiny workshops off the beaten path. it’s often intense, colourful, confronting at times, but also deeply human and inspiring. these experiences usher me out of my comfort zone and remind me how much beauty and connection is found in the unknown.
